Cape Town
A working city wedged between a mountain and two oceans.
4 to 6 nights
Twenty minutes over the peninsula, or a valley-to-valley transfer.
The Cape is a peninsula, and a peninsula makes sense from eight hundred feet in a way it never does from the road. The short flights leave from the V&A Waterfront and take twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes in the air rearranges the entire map of Cape Town in your head. It is the best value hour on most itineraries.
From the helipad at the V&A Waterfront the short circuit runs out over the harbour, along the Atlantic seaboard beneath the Twelve Apostles ridge, around Hout Bay and back over the city bowl. Twenty minutes, doors on or off, and the moment the mountain stops being a wall and becomes what it actually is: a flat massif with a city wedged into the gap between it and the sea.
Forty-five minutes takes you the length of the peninsula to Cape Point and back up the False Bay side. An hour will do the peninsula and the Winelands, crossing the Hottentots Holland into the valleys.
The more useful version on a longer trip is a helicopter that goes somewhere. Cape Town to a Winelands estate for lunch, landing on the lawn. The Waterfront to Hermanus in whale season, along the coast rather than the R44. It costs more than the road and it removes ninety minutes each way from a day.
