Shark cage diving
Gansbaai, a surface cage, and no diving qualification needed.
A boat out of Gansbaai to the channel off Dyer Island, and a cage clipped to the side of it. You take a breath and drop a metre. It is the most talked-about morning on any trip that includes it.
No qualification, no scuba, and about two seconds of real adrenaline that people talk about for the rest of the holiday.
The boat leaves Kleinbaai harbour at Gansbaai early and runs twenty minutes out to the channel between the mainland and Dyer Island, where a large Cape fur seal colony has made the water some of the most reliably shark-populated on earth. The cage is steel, floats at the surface and is clipped to the side of the boat. You sit in it in a wetsuit with your head above water until the divemaster calls, then take a breath and duck under.
What you will see
Bronze whalers and, in season, great whites. Worth being straight about this: great white numbers off Gansbaai dropped sharply after 2017 and sightings are no longer guaranteed on any given morning. Reputable operators say so on the dock and so do we. What is guaranteed is a working boat, a good briefing and water full of large sharks.
If you would rather not get in
The viewing from the deck is excellent and plenty of people end up preferring it. Nobody is talked into the cage.

- All year, with the clearest water and calmest seas between May and September. Trips are called off and rebooked in heavy swell, which we plan around.
- Who it suits
- Minimum age 8. Moderate physically. Suitable for families. No diving qualification needed. The cage floats at the surface and you breathe air from the boat. You do need to be reasonably comfortable in cold water. Children under twelve, and anyone who would rather stay dry, watch from the deck, which is a good view in its own right.
